Joining Senhouse Roman Museum as a Friend

The Senhouse Roman Museum, which houses the Netherhall Collection and other Roman objects recovered from West Cumbria, is run by an independent charitable trust and relies on its friends and charitable donations to make up the shortfall in its operating budget and to support special events. The sculptured stones and inscriptions which form the basis of the collection were assembled over the centuries by the Senhouse family of Netherhall, Maryport. They are now displayed in a Victorian Naval Battery, itself a grade II listed building, next to the remains of the Roman fort on the cliffs overlooking the Solway Firth.
At the Museum of the Year awards in 1999 the Museum received the Shoestring Award for achievement with limited resources. The Museum’s activities now include an education programme for schools, lectures, special exhibitions and events. However the day-to-day running of the Museum costs more than can we receive on the door from visitors, and fund-raising efforts are always necessary to keep the Museum open and improve its services to visitors and local people.
The Museum Trust is actively involved in research and publication to reveal the extent of settlement in Roman Maryport. Past research has included excavation in collaboration with Newcastle University which offered opportunities for volunteers to get involved and included a variety of events and activities for visitors and local residents.
The Museum relies on the practical support of its volunteers in many ways including front of house, special events, education and maintenance. The majority of these volunteers are recruited from the Friends. Please let us know if you are also interested in helping the museum by becoming a volunteer.
